Nick

Nick opened his eyes and squinted against the glaring sunlight coming through the open window.

What time was it?

Damn, he’d overslept and was late for work. Eva had never been the easiest of bosses, but since she’d gotten pregnant, she’d become a tyrant. He would have to listen to a long-winded lecture about how punctuality reflected on one’s work ethic, yadda, yadda, yadda.

But wait a minute, if yesterday was a Saturday, then today was Sunday, not Monday.

Sinking back against the pillows, Nick brought his hands to his temples and squeezed. He wasn’t feeling good. His head hurt, and his whole body ached. In fact, he was pretty sure he had a fever, which would explain why he’d collapsed last night.

He’d been coming down with a cold or the flu.

Where was that bottle of Advil Ruth had gotten him? And where was Ruth? Sunday was her one day off, and she usually slept in, cuddling in bed with him. It was his favorite day of the week.

“Ruthie?” he croaked.

His throat hurt. Definitely the flu.

There was no response.

Weird. With her bat ears, she should’ve heard him no matter where she was in the house, even if he’d whispered. Unless she’d left to run some errand.

Oh, right, it was Sunday, which meant that she was probably outside, working on her garden, weeding or planting or whatever. Nick didn’t pay much attention to her boring hobby.

She enjoyed it, though, claiming that gardening was very relaxing and satisfying.

Right. Like sweating in the sun and getting dirty was fun. But whatever. Being a couple didn’t mean he had to love everything she did, and vice versa. Ruth wasn’t into technology, except for how it could serve her, while Nick had to know how everything worked and liked to talk about it.

When he did, Ruth’s eyes would glaze over in two minutes flat.

Crap, his head hurt, and his bladder was full. He needed to get out of bed. Maybe the bottle of Advil was in the bathroom?

The world spun as Nick got up, and padding to the bathroom took longer than usual because he had to use the walls to brace against.

It seemed he’d caught a particularly nasty bug. Eva would be upset when he didn’t show up for work on Monday. They had a big corporate surveillance project going on, and she needed him. The equipment was in, but someone needed to monitor it, and they had no one else to do that.

Maybe he’d feel better by tomorrow morning, but he doubted it. Nick didn't get sick often—in fact hardly ever—but when he did, it usually hit him hard and lasted for days.

A quick glance out the bathroom window confirmed that Ruth was in the garden. He spent a long moment watching her work, admiring her legs in the old cutoff shorts she wore when gardening. As far as he was concerned, those shorts were the best part about her hobby.

When nature could no longer be denied, and his bladder was about to explode, he had to tear his gaze away.
